International conference, 2nd Call For participation & papers
CHINESE CITIES IN GLOBALIZATION
(SHANGHAI, 19-20 JUNE 2019)
Over the past few decades, research into cities-in-globalization has evolved into an increasingly diverse literature. The literature has not only become more varied in methodological and empirical terms, but also the geographies of theory-making have recently started shifting away from the west. The rapid growth in the scope and scale of research into Chinese-cities-in-globalization has created a diverse and fast-developing literature, and in this context this two-day conference has two main objectives. First, it aims to take stock of the cutting edge of the research literature on this topic. Second, by bringing together leading international researchers and specialists on Chinese urbanization (alongside researchers affiliated with the GaWC and EURICUR networks), it seeks to identify topics that warrant future investigation and reflect on the ways to purse these research agendas.

Topics
1) To what degree are analytical boxes such as global/world cities useful to analyze Chinese cities in globalization?
2) How can we best grasp and measure the global roles of Chinese cities? And how do these global roles compare to Chinese cities’ prominence at the national and regional scale?
3) What are the main social consequences of the increasing global entanglements of cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou?
4) To what degree and under which circumstances has the increasing global influence of Chinese cities been realized through the coincidence of indigenous changes in China’s political economy system (e.g. the willingness of the central government to give more autonomy to local governments)?
5) How comparable (or not) is the Chinese urban experience to ‘Other’ trajectories of increasing global urban engagements, and how can this comparison best be organized in epistemological and methodological terms?
