The 1st Urban Sustainability Science Symposium
Postpone · Shanghai · CHINA
Urban sustainability refers to an adaptive process of facilitating and maintaining a virtuous cycle between ecosystem services and human wellbeing through concerted ecological, economic, and social actions in response to changes within and beyond the urban landscape. Urban sustainability is one of the most pressing and challenging tasks facing humanity today because cities are the primary sources of major environmental problems, the centers of economic and social developments, and home to more than half of the world population. To meet the challenge of urban sustainability, cities need to be studies as spatially extended, complex adaptive systems with interdisciplinary approaches integrating ecological, economic, social, and design/planning sciences. Urban sustainability science is the science and practice of linking spatial patterns, biodiversity, ecosystem function, ecosystem services, and human wellbeing in urban landscapes under uncertainties arising from internal feedbacks and external disturbances.
The goal of the USSS is to promote the theoretical development and the place-based applications of urban sustainability science, with a focus on cities from China and elsewhere in the world. Key topics include urban resilience, urban ecosystem services, sustainable urban architecture, sustainable cities, and urban sustainability assessment. Each USSS invites leading scientists in ecology, geography, environmental economics, and sustainability science, from around the world, to provide in-depth discussions on these key topics. The USSS is intended to be an important platform to promote urban sustainability science in China and beyond.
